A few pages dedicated to some affordable everyday objects that I like to consider design classics…
No, it’s not about the Charles Eames Chair or Alvar Aalto’s Savoy vase, enough has been written about these objects already. Instead it’s more about design classics that are virtually all around us like the paperclip and the Levis 501, or the Coca-Cola bottle described by Andy Warhol as the design icon of a decade.
After a bottle design competition was launched in 1915, which was won by Earl R Dean of the Root Glass Company in Indiana, Coca-Cola launched the distinctive hobble-skirt bottle in order to beat their rivals. The original design brief stated that the bottle should be recognisable by touch in the dark or when submerged in a bucket of ice. It even should be recognisable by its component pieces if broken. The story goes the designers were inspired by the cocoa bean and transplanted its vertical grooves to the glass. Experts estimate that the contour bottle is recognized by 90% of the world's population ( and I guess having one of the most recognised logos in the world does help as well).
I have to admit that the right-hand sided Citroën DS entry is not really a daily object, and it’s no longer manufactured either, so it’s a double cheat, but I love this design so much I did not want to deny it it’s claim to fame… On the other hand, 100 per cent owning a spot here are the Lyle’s Golden Syrup tin and the Bic M10 Clic!
